Within the framework of the ORAMMA project, the first training programme for the Maternity Peer Supporters (MPSs) was organised by the Athens Midwifery School (coordinator of ORAMMA project) on 24-26 of January at the Maternal District Hospital of “Elena Venizelos” in Athens. Purpose of this training was to prepare the Maternity Peer Supporters within the ORAMMA approach who will be recruited to support mothers in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team caring for refugee and other migrant women during pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period.
Nineteen (19) MPSs participated in the 3-day training mostly from Arab speaking countries, who were members of refugee communities and understand the Greek language. The training program consisted of an introductory section to the ORAMMA project, mini lectures and group discussions about the role of MPS during the perinatal care of migrant and other refugee pregnant women. Also, the training program included ice breaker exercises and various interactive activities such as group discussions, role plays, simulation exercises, exchange of experiences and video related to antenatal care and breastfeeding from Medical Aid Films.
