Hellenic Mediterranean University is taking steps towards inclusion of LGBTI+ students

A workshop titled “Issues of visibility and challenges regarding the inclusion of the LGBTI+ community in HMU” was held on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at 9:30 am in the Amphitheater of the School of Health Sciences of the Hellenic Mediterranean University. The workshop was co-organized by the Counseling and Psychosocial Support Office (KE.SY.PSY), the Gender Equality Committee (GEC) and the Laboratory of Health and Road Safety (LaHeRS) of the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU). The purpose of the workshop was to inform and raise awareness about issues concerning the LGBTI+ community.

Among the key points reaised were: the need to raise awareness among students on LGBTI+ issues, the need to address the challenges of the LGBTI+ community and create an inclusive academic environment through the adoption of an inclusive discourse. The Hellenic Mediterranean University tries to pave the way towards the visibility and equality of its LGBTI+ members, giving, through this workshop, the opportunity to acknowledge the value of actions to overcome discrimination and inequalities, but also the need for more efforts to strengthen the visibility and inclusion of LGBTI+ people.

Besides other important topics, the workshop highlighted issues of harassment and discrimination against the LGBTI+ community in the university and introduced a new mechanism, which is now established by the Gender Equality Committee of HMU, through which the students and the staff can report incidents of discrimination, harassment and violence. Overall, this event emphasized the need to merge all efforts in order to assist the University Authorities towards the adoption of a comprehensive policy for LGBTI+ individuals.
